Miguel Covarrubias: Una Mirada Sin Fronteras (A Boundless Vision)

The exhibition *Miguel Covarrubias: Una Mirada Sin Fronteras (A Boundless Vision)*, currently on view at the Palacio de Cultura Citibanamex – Palacio de Iturbide, offers a rare opportunity to rediscover one of Mexico’s most versatile and visionary 20th-century artists. Featuring over 450 works from 38 national and 13 international collections, the exhibition—curated by Sergio Raúl Arroyo and Anahí Luna Velasco—showcases the extraordinary breadth and depth of Covarrubias’s legacy, spanning caricature, painting, anthropology, cartography, and stage design.

From his early days as a caricaturist in Mexican publications to international acclaim in *Vanity Fair* and *The New Yorker*, Covarrubias demonstrated a remarkable ability to capture both the personalities of public figures and the social dynamics of his time. His celebrated series *Negro Drawings* (1927) stands as a powerful testament to his sensitivity toward African American culture and his skill in conveying the energy and rhythm of jazz and dance.

The exhibition also highlights Covarrubias’s work as an ethnographer and anthropologist, most notably through his seminal book *Island of Bali* (1937), the result of his extended stay on the Indonesian island alongside his wife Rosa Rolanda. On view as well are his mural maps, such as *Geografía del arte popular mexicano*, which beautifully blend art and science to offer a comprehensive vision of the cultures of the Pacific and Mesoamerica.

Covarrubias also made significant contributions to stage and costume design, collaborating with the National Institute of Fine Arts to promote modern dance in Mexico. His interdisciplinary approach and commitment to cultural research position him as a key figure in understanding the intersection of art, science, and society in modern Mexico.

The exhibition remains open to the public through September 21, 2025, offering an enriching experience for anyone interested in exploring the work of a creator who transcended disciplines and borders.
